Rob Downey
Founder and Companion Animal Nutritionist
Rob Downey has dedicated many years studying nutrition to improve the health and well being of your canine companions. Rob’s passion for working dogs led him to University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine where he worked as a field researcher and graduate student with the late Dr. David Kronfeld. This work forever changed the way moderate to endurance performance dogs were fed and has been the foundation for canine athletes for the past 37 years. Rob’s research has been published in several peer reviewed Veterinary and Nutrition journals as well as being cited in the NRC Nutrient Requirements for Dogs and Cats. In 2016 Rob was named a Pet Industry Icon by Pet Age Magazine for his contribution to the wellbeing of our beloved pets. In 2021 Rob received the Distinguished Alumni Award from The Ohio State University CFAES for his dedication to companion animal nutrition and community activism. In 2022 Rob was given the Power 50 Award from Pet Age Magazine for his leadership and dedication to the pet industry and as well as his decades of animal health and nutrition experience.
Joe Wakshlag
DVM, PhD, DACVIM (Nutrition), DACVSMR
Dr. Joe Wakshlag is a graduate of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine receiving his DVM in 1998. He then continued advanced training in Veterinary Pathology and Veterinary Nutrition along with PhD training at Cornell University receiving his PhD in 2005 and board certification in Veterinary Nutrition in 2008 becoming a member of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition (ACVIM – nutrition). He became a founding diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2010. He has worked as a veterinarian in private practice full time and locum since 2003 and became an assistant professor at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006 advancing to become a Full Professor in 2019. He has published over 150 peer reviewed publications and book chapters in the areas of canine and feline obesity, sporting dog physiology and metabolism, nutraceuticals in cancer cell biology and canine osteoarthritis. He has become a leading authority in veterinary nutrition and nutraceuticals and is an avid sporting dog enthusiast. He has had a long history at Annamaet for over 25 years working with the Annamaet team to develop formulas and provide technical support.

Chicken Meal
Chicken is considered a superior protein source in pet food because of its high digestibility and bioavailability, while being more sustainable compared to beef and many fish sources. It is a nutrient-dense, lean protein source that helps promote lean muscle mass. Chicken meal is a concentrated protein ingredient made by cooking clean chicken flesh and skin to remove most of the moisture and fat.
Whole Chicken
Whole chicken provides highly digestible animal protein and a complete range of essential amino acids. In pet food, chicken refers to clean chicken flesh and skin and may include bone, but not feathers, heads, feet or entrails. We use whole chicken in our freeze-dried raw formulas to provide protein, flavor and naturally occurring nutrients.
Chicken Breast
Chicken breast is a lean cut of muscle meat that supplies highly digestible protein and essential amino acids. It helps support lean muscle while adding the natural flavor and texture expected from a meat-rich freeze-dried diet.
Chicken Heart
Chicken heart is a nutrient-dense organ that is also primarily muscle tissue. It provides high-quality protein along with naturally occurring taurine, iron and B vitamins. We use it to broaden the nutrient and amino acid profile of our freeze-dried chicken formula.
Chicken Liver
Chicken liver is a nutrient-dense organ meat and a natural source of protein, iron, copper and several vitamins. Used in controlled amounts, it helps improve palatability and contributes nutrients that muscle meat alone does not provide.
Turkey
Turkey is a lean, highly digestible poultry protein that supplies the essential amino acids needed to maintain muscle and overall health. In pet food, turkey refers to clean turkey flesh and skin and may include bone. It offers a useful alternative for dogs that do better with a poultry source other than chicken.
Turkey Meal
Turkey meal is a concentrated protein ingredient made by cooking clean turkey flesh and skin, with or without bone, and removing most of the moisture and fat. This creates a nutrient-dense source of animal protein that supplies essential amino acids without adding excess water to a dry formula.
Turkey Heart
Turkey heart is a highly palatable organ that is rich in muscle protein. It naturally supplies taurine, iron and B vitamins and helps create a broader nutrient profile in our freeze-dried turkey formula.
Turkey Liver
Turkey liver is a concentrated source of protein, iron, copper and vitamins, including vitamin A and several B vitamins. We use it in controlled amounts to improve flavor and provide nutrients naturally found in organ meat.
Grass-Fed Beef
Beef is a highly palatable source of complete animal protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B12. The beef used in our Surf & Turf formula is grass-fed and supplies essential amino acids that help support strong, lean muscle.
Beef Heart
Beef heart is a nutrient-dense organ that is made primarily of muscle tissue. It provides high-quality protein, iron, B vitamins and naturally occurring taurine while adding rich flavor to our Surf & Turf formula.
Beef Liver
Beef liver is a nutrient-rich organ meat that naturally provides protein, iron, copper and vitamins A and B12. Used in appropriate amounts, it improves palatability and complements the nutrients supplied by muscle meat.
Ground Beef Bone
Finely ground beef bone is a natural source of calcium and phosphorus. These minerals are carefully balanced within the complete formula to support normal bone and tooth development. Grinding the bone allows it to be safely and evenly incorporated into the food.
Deboned Lamb
Deboned lamb is fresh lamb with the bone removed before it is added to the formula. It is a highly digestible red-meat protein that supplies essential amino acids, iron and B vitamins. We use free-range lamb from New Zealand as a palatable alternative to more common protein sources.
Lamb Meal
Lamb meal is made by cooking lamb tissue and removing most of the moisture and fat. The result is a concentrated source of protein, amino acids and naturally occurring minerals that works well in nutrient-dense dry foods.
Free-Range New Zealand Lamb
Our New Zealand lamb is sourced from free-range animals and provides highly digestible red-meat protein. It supplies essential amino acids, iron and B vitamins while offering an alternative to chicken and beef.
Duck Meal
Duck meal is a concentrated poultry protein made by cooking clean duck flesh and skin, with or without bone, and removing most of the moisture and fat. It provides essential amino acids and rich flavor and offers another poultry option within our grain-free formulas.
Salmon
Salmon is a highly digestible fish protein and a natural source of marine omega-3 fatty acids. It provides essential amino acids while helping support healthy skin, coat and normal inflammatory balance.
Salmon Meal
Salmon is an excellent, highly digestible protein source for pet food. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids known for supporting skin, coat and joint health and can be a useful alternative to common proteins such as beef or chicken. Salmon meal is produced by cooking clean salmon or salmon cuttings and removing most of the moisture, leaving a dried, nutrient-dense source of protein.
Herring Meal
Herring meal is made from clean herring or herring cuttings that are cooked, dried and ground, with some of the oil sometimes removed. It provides concentrated protein, essential amino acids and naturally occurring marine omega-3 fatty acids.
Whitefish and Whitefish Meal
Whitefish is a lean, highly digestible fish protein that supplies essential amino acids and marine nutrients. Whitefish meal is the concentrated form produced by drying and grinding clean whitefish or whitefish cuttings after most of the moisture has been removed.
MSC-Certified, Line-Caught Alaskan Cod
Alaskan cod is a lean, highly digestible fish protein with a strong essential amino acid profile. Our cod is line-caught and certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, providing traceability and independent verification that the fishery meets recognized sustainability standards.
Cod Heads
Cod heads are the nutrient-rich portion remaining after fish are prepared for the human food supply. They contain usable meat, cartilage, bone and naturally occurring fish oil, providing protein, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids. Using them allows us to make better use of a high-quality, traceable marine resource.
Silver Carp
Silver carp is a wild-caught, lean fish that provides high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids. These filter-feeding fish eat low on the food chain and are an invasive species in the Mississippi River and Great Lakes regions. Using silver carp provides a distinctive protein source while helping reduce pressure on native aquatic ecosystems.
Menhaden Fish Meal
Menhaden fish meal is a concentrated protein ingredient made from clean menhaden that are cooked, dried and ground. It supplies essential amino acids along with naturally occurring marine fats and minerals.
Poultry Liver
Poultry liver is a highly palatable organ ingredient that naturally supplies protein, iron, copper and several vitamins. It is used in controlled amounts to improve flavor and add nutrient density to performance products.
Whole Dried Eggs
Whole dried eggs are made by removing the moisture from clean, wholesome eggs. Eggs provide highly digestible protein with an excellent balance of essential amino acids, along with beneficial fats and naturally occurring vitamins.

Marine Microalgae Oil
Marine microalgae oil is a direct and sustainable source of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. Fish obtain these nutrients by consuming organisms lower in the marine food chain, so using microalgae allows us to go closer to the original source. We use it to provide a stable supply of omega-3 fatty acids for brain, eye, skin and coat health.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats involved in normal cell function and the body’s inflammatory response. Our formulas obtain omega-3s from ingredients such as marine microalgae oil, fish oil and flaxseed to support skin, coat, brain and immune health.
EPA and DHA
EPA and DHA are long-chain marine omega-3 fatty acids that the body can use directly. EPA helps support normal inflammatory balance, skin and immune health, while DHA is especially important for brain and eye development and cognitive function.
Menhaden Fish Oil
Menhaden oil is obtained from menhaden, a small marine fish, and is naturally rich in EPA and DHA. We use it as a concentrated source of omega-3 fatty acids to support skin, coat, brain and immune health.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil provides concentrated energy and is a rich source of medium-chain triglycerides, or MCTs. MCTs have been studied for their role in supporting cognitive function and mental alertness, especially in older dogs. Coconut oil also contributes fatty acids that help support healthy skin and coat.
Medium-Chain Triglycerides
Medium-chain triglycerides are fats that are absorbed and used for energy differently than many longer-chain fats. They can provide a readily available energy source and have been studied for supporting brain function in aging dogs. Coconut oil is the primary source of MCTs in our formulas.
Flaxseed and Flaxseed Meal
Flaxseed supplies plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, primarily alpha-linolenic acid, along with fiber and naturally occurring lignans. Flaxseed meal is made by grinding the seed, making these nutrients easier to distribute throughout the food.
L-Carnitine
L-carnitine is a vitamin-like nutrient that helps transport fatty acids into the cell structures where they are used for energy. We add physiologically relevant amounts to help support fat metabolism, lean muscle retention and healthy heart function.
Taurine
Taurine is an amino-acid-like nutrient that is essential for cats and nutritionally important for dogs. It supports normal heart function, vision, digestion and nervous-system health. We supplement taurine in formulas where it helps provide an appropriate nutritional margin.
Betaine Anhydrous
Betaine anhydrous is a stable, water-free form of betaine, a naturally occurring compound related to choline. It acts as a methyl donor and osmoregulator, helping cells manage water balance while supporting liver, muscle and energy metabolism. It is also used in our recovery products as part of the nutritional approach to post-exercise glycogen replenishment.
Choline
Choline is an essential nutrient needed to build cell membranes and support normal liver and nervous-system function. It also helps the body transport and use fat properly. We supply choline through carefully selected ingredients and supplemental sources when needed.

Prebiotics
Prebiotics are specific fibers that resist digestion by the pet and instead feed beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract. We use ingredients such as dried chicory root and inulin to help support a balanced microbiome and healthy digestion.
Dried Chicory Root
Dried chicory root is a natural source of inulin, a soluble prebiotic fiber. It helps nourish beneficial intestinal bacteria and supports normal stool quality and digestive function.
Inulin
Inulin is a soluble, fermentable fiber that functions as a prebiotic. Because the pet does not fully digest it, beneficial bacteria in the colon can use it as a food source to support a healthy intestinal environment.
Probiotics
Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms used to support a balanced intestinal microbiome. Our labels identify dried fermentation products from selected bacteria that help support normal digestion and gastrointestinal health when included as part of a complete formula.
Lactobacillus casei
Lactobacillus casei is a beneficial lactic-acid-producing bacterium commonly associated with the intestinal tract and fermented foods. Its fermentation product is included to help support microbial balance and normal digestive function.
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Lactobacillus acidophilus is a well-known beneficial bacterium that produces lactic acid. Its fermentation product is used to help support a healthy intestinal environment and normal digestion.
Lactobacillus reuteri
Lactobacillus reuteri is a beneficial bacterial species naturally associated with the gastrointestinal tract of many animals. Its fermentation product is included as part of our broader approach to microbiome and digestive support.
Bifidobacterium animalis
Bifidobacterium animalis is a beneficial bacterium commonly used in foods designed to support intestinal health. Its fermentation product helps complement our prebiotic fibers and supports a balanced gastrointestinal environment.
Bifidobacterium thermophilum
Bifidobacterium thermophilum is a beneficial bacterial species used in the fermentation blend found in Annamaet Impact. Its fermentation product helps support microbial balance and normal digestive function.
Enterococcus faecium
Enterococcus faecium is a beneficial bacterial species commonly used in animal nutrition products. Its fermentation product is included in Annamaet Impact to help support normal intestinal function and microbial balance.
Psyllium Husk
Psyllium husk is a soluble, gel-forming fiber that absorbs water in the digestive tract. It helps support normal intestinal movement, stool consistency and the structure of the gut lining.
Pumpkin
Pumpkin provides soluble and insoluble fiber along with naturally occurring beta-carotene. We use it to support normal digestive function, stool quality and palatability.
Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds provide protein, beneficial fats, fiber and naturally occurring minerals. They complement the whole-food profile of our Turkey & Pumpkin Freeze-Dried Raw formula.
Dried Beet Pulp
Dried beet pulp is the fibrous material that remains after sugar is removed from sugar beets. It provides moderately fermentable fiber that can support beneficial intestinal bacteria, normal stool quality and digestive health without adding significant sugar.
Miscanthus Grass
Miscanthus grass is a carefully processed plant fiber used to add dietary fiber without excessive calories. It helps support fullness, normal intestinal movement and stool quality, making it useful in weight-management formulas.
Yucca schidigera Extract
Yucca schidigera is a desert plant containing naturally occurring saponins. Its extract is commonly used in pet nutrition to help manage stool odor and complement digestive-support ingredients.
Brewers Dried Yeast
Brewers dried yeast is the dried yeast remaining from fermentation after the brewing process. It provides protein, B vitamins and naturally occurring compounds that can improve flavor and contribute to overall nutrient density.

Blueberries
Blueberries provide fiber and naturally occurring plant compounds, including anthocyanins. These compounds have antioxidant activity and help complement the complete vitamin and mineral system in our formulas.
Cranberries
Cranberries provide fiber and naturally occurring antioxidants called polyphenols. They are included in our feline and canine formulas to support overall wellness and normal urinary-tract health.
Dried Apples
Dried apples provide fiber, carbohydrates and naturally occurring plant nutrients after most of their water has been removed. They contribute to digestive support and add whole-food variety to the formula.
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are nutrient-dense root vegetables that provide digestible carbohydrates, fiber and beta-carotene. They supply steady energy and help support normal digestive function.
Carrots
Carrots provide fiber and naturally occurring carotenoids, including beta-carotene. We use them as a functional whole-food ingredient that contributes nutrients, color and digestive support.
Turmeric
Turmeric is a natural botanical ingredient used in some of our pre-therapeutic diets. It is a spice that contains the naturally occurring compound curcumin, which has been studied for its role in supporting the body’s normal inflammatory response. When used in appropriate amounts within a balanced diet, turmeric can contribute to overall wellness and mobility support for dogs and cats.
Ginger
Ginger is a botanical ingredient valued for its natural aromatic compounds. In small, appropriate amounts it contributes flavor and complements ingredients used to support normal digestive comfort.
Parsley
Parsley is a culinary herb that provides natural flavor along with small amounts of vitamins and plant compounds. It adds whole-food variety to our freeze-dried raw formulas.
Kelp
Kelp is a marine plant that naturally contains iodine and trace minerals. We use it in controlled amounts so it can contribute to the mineral profile without disturbing the careful balance of the complete diet.
Banana Powder
Banana powder is made by drying and grinding bananas. It provides digestible carbohydrate, natural flavor and small amounts of fiber and potassium in a concentrated, easy-to-use form.
Marigold Petals
Marigold petals are a natural source of carotenoid pigments, including lutein. Lutein acts as an antioxidant and is associated with normal eye health.
Rosemary Extract
Rosemary extract is derived from the rosemary plant and contains natural antioxidant compounds. It is used in small amounts to help protect fats from oxidation and maintain product freshness.
Joint-Support Ingredients
Freeze-Dried Green-Lipped Mussel
Green-lipped mussel, or Perna canaliculus, is an edible shellfish from New Zealand. It naturally provides several glycosaminoglycans, marine fatty acids and other nutrients found in healthy joint tissues. We use the freeze-dried ingredient in Endure to help maintain normal joint comfort, mobility and cartilage function.
Glucosamine HCl
Glucosamine is a naturally occurring building block used by the body to produce glycosaminoglycans found in cartilage and joint fluid. The hydrochloride form provides a concentrated and stable source used to help maintain normal joint structure and flexibility. The glucosamine in Endure is sourced from shellfish.
Non-Bovine Chondroitin Sulfate
Chondroitin sulfate is a naturally occurring component of cartilage and joint fluid. It helps cartilage retain water and supports the cushioning and normal movement of joints. We use a non-bovine source in Annamaet Endure.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant nutrient involved in collagen production and normal immune function. Dogs can make vitamin C, but supplemental vitamin C can provide additional nutritional support during periods of exercise or stress. We use it in Endure and Impact as part of their joint, recovery and antioxidant support.
Performance and Recovery Ingredients
Maltodextrins
Maltodextrins are rapidly digestible carbohydrates made from starch. When provided soon after strenuous exercise, they supply glucose that can be used to rebuild depleted muscle glycogen. This is why maltodextrins are the primary functional ingredient in Glycocharge and Recovery Chews.
Dextrose
Dextrose is a simple form of glucose that is readily absorbed and used for energy. In Glycocharge, it works with maltodextrins to provide carbohydrate for post-exercise muscle glycogen replenishment.
Electrolytes
Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium that carry an electrical charge in body fluids. They are needed for normal hydration, nerve signaling and muscle function and are carefully balanced in our performance supplements.
Magnesium
Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in energy metabolism, muscle contraction, nerve function and bone structure. We include it in appropriate forms and amounts to help complete the mineral balance of foods and performance supplements.

Chelated Minerals and Proteinates
Chelated minerals are trace minerals bound to an organic molecule, such as an amino acid or small protein fragment. This protected form can improve mineral stability and utilization compared with less available inorganic forms. Our mineral system includes proteinated forms of zinc, iron, copper and manganese to support immunity, skin, coat and overall health.
Seaweed-Derived Calcium (Lithothamnium corallioides)
This calcium comes from a calcified red marine algae called Lithothamnium corallioides. It provides concentrated calcium along with naturally occurring trace minerals and is used in Enhance to help balance raw and home-prepared diets.
Selenium Yeast and Selenomethionine
Selenium yeast and selenomethionine are organic forms of the essential trace mineral selenium. Selenium supports normal antioxidant defenses, thyroid function and immune health. These forms allow selenium to be supplied in a highly usable and carefully controlled manner.
Stabilized Vitamin C
L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate is a stabilized source of vitamin C designed to better withstand food processing and storage. Vitamin C contributes antioxidant activity and is involved in collagen formation and normal immune function.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes from oxidative damage. We use stable supplemental forms, including alpha-tocopheryl succinate where appropriate, to support immune, skin and overall cellular health.
Mixed Tocopherols
Mixed tocopherols are forms of vitamin E commonly obtained from vegetable oils. They act as natural antioxidants that help protect fats and oils from oxidation, supporting product freshness without the use of artificial preservatives.

Brown Rice
Brown rice is a whole grain with the bran layer retained. It provides digestible carbohydrate for energy along with fiber, B vitamins and naturally occurring minerals.
Millet
Millet is a small, naturally gluten-free ancient grain. It provides digestible starch for energy along with fiber, protein and minerals and works well as part of a balanced grain-inclusive formula.
Sorghum
Sorghum is an ancient whole grain that provides digestible carbohydrate, fiber and naturally occurring plant compounds. It offers steady energy and adds grain variety without using corn, wheat or soy.
Rolled Oats
Rolled oats are whole oats that have been steamed and flattened. They provide digestible carbohydrates, soluble fiber and naturally occurring B vitamins and minerals.
Pearled Barley
Pearled barley is barley with the tough outer hull and part of the bran removed. It provides digestible starch, fiber and nutrients while helping create a consistent kibble texture.
Oat Flour
Oat flour is made by finely grinding oats. It provides digestible carbohydrate and soluble fiber and also helps give our freeze-dried turkey formula the structure needed to hold together.
Lentils
Lentils are pulses that provide complex carbohydrates, plant protein and dietary fiber. They contribute energy, texture and a complementary amino acid profile in grain-free formulas.
Chickpeas
Chickpeas are nutrient-dense pulses that provide complex carbohydrates, plant protein and fiber. They help supply energy and structure while contributing to the overall nutrient profile of grain-free foods.
Field Peas
Field peas are dried peas used as a source of complex carbohydrate, plant protein and fiber. They provide energy and help create the texture of grain-free kibble while complementing the formula’s animal proteins.

Line-caught Cod is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, meaning it is fully traceable from the boat it's caught on to the bag it's packaged in. The MSC monitors wild fish populations to preserve healthy stocks for future generations, and every sale supports this effort, contributing to the long-term wellbeing of our oceans.
Marine microalgae as a source of EPA and DHA
A totally sustainable source of Omega 3 Fatty Acids. The microalgae used in Annamaet products contains high quality, stable EPA and DHA. Fish get their Omega 3’s from the microalgae they consume. By going right to the source we are preserving our natural, renewable resources for generations.
Use of invasive silver carp
Silver carp are natural filter feeders that eat plankton and algae, making them high in omega-3s and low in contaminants. Considered a delicacy in parts of Europe and Asia, they're an important human food source. In the U.S., silver carp are an invasive species in the Great Lakes, so using them helps protect our natural resources while providing a superior, novel protein source for pets.
